A new exhibition at the
Governor John Langdon House
Opening Reception
Friday, June 1, 5:30-7:30 PM
Governor John Langdon House, Portsmouth, NH
You are invited to celebrate the opening of the art exhibition featuring the bold, colorful work by Portsmouth artist Richard Haynes. Co-presented by Historic New England and the Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire.
The Langdon family story and enslaved Africans in Portsmouth goes back to the mid-seventeenth century. The house history includes Cyrus Bruce, an emancipated man who served as major domo for the Langdons, and Ona Marie Judge, the Washington’s runaway slave.
Haynes showcases a series of paintings inspired by Jacqueline Tobin’s book, Hidden in Plain View. Vibrant quilt patterns depict the complex, sophisticated, and covert story of enslaved men and women who escaped via the Underground Railroad.
