SCHOOL TOUR DESCRIPTION: Students will enjoy a 60-minute tour of the 128-foot recreation of the Amistad ship. The tour will delve into how and why the reconstruction was built, the differences from the original, and how we use the Amistad ship today. Everyone on board will learn about the Amistad story, beginning with its origins in West Africa, followed by the Middle Passage, the rebellion on the ship, and the court trials in the United States. Students will discover how the 53 kidnapped Africans successfully planned and executed a rebellion against their illegal enslavement and how they ultimately ended up in Connecticut. The significance of New Hampshire and Portsmouth’s history and legacy is emphasized.

 

GUIDED TOURS FOR INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND GROUPS: Participants will enjoy a 60-minute tour of the 129-foot recreation of the Amistad ship. Everyone on board will learn about the Amistad story, starting from its origins in West Africa, through the Middle Passage, the rebellion aboard the ship, to the court trials in the United States. Participants will discover how the 53 kidnapped Africans planned and executed a successful rebellion against their illegal enslavement and how they ultimately ended up in Connecticut. The significance of New Hampshire and Portsmouth’s history and legacy is highlighted.

  •  SELF-GUIDED TOURS: Visitors will have the chance to explore the 129-foot Amistad ship (maximum of 60 people on the deck at once). Multiple Amistad educators are available to welcome and engage with guests. The tour will address how and why the re-creation was constructed, its differences from the original, and the ship’s current purpose. Participants will discover the Amistad story, from its origins in West Africa, through the Middle Passage, the rebellion aboard the ship, to the court trials in the United States. The significance of New Hampshire and Portsmouth’s history and legacy is highlighted.

 

  • VIP TOUR DESCRIPTION: VIP tours are exclusive and interactive experiences featuring private 60-minute tours of the 128-foot recreation of the Amistad ship, including below deck and the ship’s workings. The tour will explore how and why the reconstruction was built, the differences from the original, and how they utilize the Amistad ship today. Everyone on board will learn about the Amistad story, beginning with its roots in West Africa, the Middle Passage, the rebellion on the ship, and the subsequent court trials in the United States. Participants will witness how the 53 kidnapped Africans planned and executed a successful rebellion against their illegal enslavement and how they ultimately ended up in Connecticut. The importance of New Hampshire and the history and legacy of Portsmouth is also emphasized.
  • Please note: This tour fills at 35 people. The lower deck of the ship is accessed via a steep set of stairs not unlike a ladder.
