Black history in plain sight: One woman’s quest to topple stereotypes

Valerie Cunningham is a truth-teller. She’s known for busting myths by bringing hidden stories of African Americans to life – stories that can help shape a better understanding of the nation’s early chapters. Through decades of digging alone in church basements, archives, and courthouses, Ms. Cunningham laid the foundation for the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail, which turns 25 next year and includes a large memorial for the 18th-century African Burying Ground.

2019 Citizen of the Year Award Winner: Melvin B. Miller

The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2019 Citizen of the Year Award is Melvin B. Miller. Miller, chief editor and publisher of the Bay State Banner. He will be honored at the 2019 Black New England Conference (BNEC) for his work and reports on local politics and national issues relating to social and economic justice affecting African Americans.
Miller will receive this distinction at the Friday evening Black New England Conference Award Dinner, October 25, the opening day of the 13th annual conference in Manchester, New Hampshire.

BHTNH Announce 2019 Bus & Walking Tour in Hancock, NH

Hancock, NH:  The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire (BHTNH), is thrilled to announce its 2019 bus/walking tour in Hancock.  This is the second year that the BHTNH has held tours outside of the original area of Portsmouth and the Seacoast, where it offered guided walking and trolley tours along the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail.  
Hancock, which can be described as a “quintessential New England village”, appears to be a place where time has stood still.

April Ryan bringing ‘State of Black Press’ to NH

PORTSMOUTH — The Black Heritage Trail of New Hampshire has announced White House correspondent April Ryan will keynote its 13th annual Black New England Conference, a two-day event in October at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester.

The theme of this year’s conference, scheduled to be held Oct. 25-26, is “BLACK INK: African American News from Slave Songs to Social Media.”
